BASIL & ITS EFFECTS

With its essential oils, an abundance of vitamins and its tannins, basil has various health-promoting effects. But there is even more to know about basil, so we at the Adults Only Hotel Tyrol, Golf Hotel Leutasch Seefeld, have compiled a few more tricks for the proper care of basil for you.

There are more than 60 different species of basil, botanically also called Ocimum. They are characterised by their high content of essential oils and their strong, spicy flavour. "Ocimum basilicum" is the most commonly used species of this Mediterranean plant.

In addition to essential oils, the leaves of basil also contain vitamins E, D, C, all B vitamins and A, as well as tannins.
The health-promoting effect of basil has been known in Central Europe since the Middle Ages and is also used at our adults only hotel in Tyrol, the Golf Hotel Leutasch Seefeld, because of its tannins.

TIPS ON CARING FOR YOUR BASIL

Unfortunately, basil plants commonly drop their leaves soon after being purchased, wilting on the kitchen windowsill and usually dying rather quickly.

Here's how to take care of your basil plant:

  • Do not tear the plastic wrapping immediately, but cut off about 1 cm of it every day. This gives the basil time to slowly get used to its new home.
  • Harvest only the largest leaves. This way, small ones can grow back.
  • You should always keep the basil's soil moist. If it is too dry, the plant will die; on the other hand, if it is too moist, grey mould may form.
